Fremont, Nebraska - A 12-game home stand continues for Fremont on Thursday as it hosts the Spearfish Sasquatch for a four-game stretch. Game one begins a busy stretch for the Moo (6-2, 2nd in ILB), who will play 11 games in 10 days, including nine in a row at home. The Sasquatch (4-7, 7th in ILB) play this standalone road series before returning home on Tuesday, June 11.
Spearfish has played the toughest schedule in the league thus far, playing seven of its first eleven contests against first place Casper. In the opening series of the year, the Sasquatch were swept by the Spuds in a four-game series. The Sasquatch went 3-1 in their next four games, traveling to the Zap for one game and hosting the Prospects for three.
Most recently, the Sasquatch hosted three games with the Spuds. Spearfish handed Casper its only loss of the season in game one with a 9-8 win, before 7-1 and 11-10 losses on Sunday and Monday. Both the Moo and Sasquatch have had two rest days leading up to the four-game set at Historic Moller Field.
Despite a slow start out of the gate, some early offensive leaders have emerged for Spearfish. Benjamin Green is hitting .433 with a massive 1.131 OPS in eight appearances this year, already having scored 12 runs. Seven players are hitting .300 or above for the Sasquatch.
A lot of the hitting early on has come with power. While the team lacks exuberant speed, they make up for powerful hitting. In eleven games, the team already has 19 doubles and two triples. Lane Seim leads the team in homers with two, while Ryan Bachman also has one home run on the year.
While the Spearfish have struggled to string together consistent wins, the Moo have taken care of business en route to a 6-2 start. Seven of Fremont’s first eight matchups have come against the Oahe Zap.
On Monday, the Moo successfully completed a seven-inning doubleheader sweep of the Zap behind dominant starting pitching. In game one, Wayne State’s Kadyn Van Hill went six innings of one-hit, scoreless ball as the Moo won 9-2. The Moo’s defense turned three double plays in the win.
In game two, Creighton’s Robert O’Malley pitched four scoreless innings and Fremont won 7-0, securing its first shutout win of the season. Catcher Cooper Fuchino went yard in the sixth inning, the Moo’s first homerun this year. The victory secured a 2-1 series win for Fremont, who have yet to lose a series this year.
After a slow start to the season offensively, the Moo seem to be starting to find their footing. Outfielder Miles Meadows is hitting .400 on the year, with Fuchino close behind at .393. Additionally, 11 different players have recorded an extra-base hit. Infielder Dylan Brandenburg leads the team with seven RBIs. On the mound, five different players have recorded wins, while Hayden Kelberlau and Ryan Semin both have saves.
Last year the Moo went 6-3 against the Sasquatch, winning all three series two games to one.
