It was 85 and sunny in the South Dakota capital, Pierre, as the Moo looked to right the ship. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky for what would become a less than perfect afternoon for the Moo. Much like the night prior, errors would hurt the Moo early. The Zap would score two on a Michael Baker (Cal State-Chico) error at third to make it an early 2-0 Zap lead in the 2nd inning. The Zap would continue their offensive attack, pushing across three in the third and forth. The Moo would score a run in the top of the fifth as Preston Gajewski (NOC-Tonkawa) would make a mad dash home on a stolen base and throwing error combo to put the Moo on the board. The Moo had a singular run before the Zap would score two in the bottom half to answer back the Moo’s lone run to make it, 10-1 Zap at the end of the fifth. The nail in the coffin came in the bottom of the 7th. Pitcher-coach, Tyler Dunham (Midland) would come on and surrender the walk-off run to send the Moo packing. A sac fly from Andrew Phillips would score Nick Golden to end the game at 11-1. The Moo would be ten-run ruled for the second time in two nights The Moo fall to a 3-4 record as they head into Hastings. The Zap improve to 3-5 and sweep the Moo during their opening home stand. Joshua Hardamon (Midland) would make a surprise appearance in relief and work out of the inning. The Zap had batted around without registering a hit. The Moo would not muster any more runs in the contest. It would go from bad to worse as the Zap would put up a touchdown on the scoreboard, seven runs. The Moo would respond with a run of their own in the 5th with Carter Schellsmidt (Marshalltown CC) driving in Tyler Wise (Kansas Wesleyan) to make it 8-4 Moo. A doubleheader was on the slate for the Moo on Wednesday, May 28th. The Moo looked to clean up defensively, get the bats going, and obtain their first win of the 2025 season. Here’s how it all went down. Game 1 Game one would not go the way of the Moo as they would fall 8-3 in seven to the Sasquatch. It was a scenic mountain morning in Spearfish as kids day at the park would bring a sold out and energetic crowd, ready to cheer on the home heroes. The Sasquatch would strike first in the bottom of the 3rd. With two on and two out, Jordan Boman (Cerro Coso CC) would dribble a ball out in front of the plate and when Carter Schellsmidt (Marshalltown CC) went to fire the ball down to first, it sailed past Grant Rychnovsky (Northwestern (IA)), allowing the first run to score. The Moo would strike back to tie and take the lead in the top of the 5th when with two on base, Michael Baker (Cal State-Chico) would continue to swing a hot bat, driving in a run with an RBI double. After a Joshua Hardamon (Midland U.) double, Carter Schellsmidt would hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Baker to give the Moo a 2-1 lead. The lead would not last for the Moo however, the Spearfish bats would wake up and quickly retort the Moo’s top of the 5th with a 4-run inning, highlighted by the Moo’s inability to throw strikes. The top of the 6th would see an errand throw from Giovanni Mastroras (Capital U.) allow Caden Brezinski (Butler) home to score from second on a stolen base attempt to pull the Moo within two runs. The Moo relievers could not keep the score at 5-3. An RBI single and a pair of passed balls would score three in the inning and effectively ended any chance for a comeback as the Moo’s comeback attempt would end with a 4-6-3 double play to secure the Sasquatch’s second win of the series, 8-3 the final in seven innings. Fremont would score 3 runs on 6 hits while committing 1 error while Spearfish scored 8 runs on 4 hits while committing 2 errors in the field --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 The second feature presentation of Independence League Baseball from the Black Hills would start when the sun began to set behind the mountainous features to the east. Luca Dickinson (Skyline) would toe the rubber for the Moo in Game 2 and would dazzle in his Moo debut. Five strong innings of work, allowing two hits and two walks and retired four via the strikeout in Dickinson’s curtain raiser. The Moo would strike first in the top of the second as Luke Saxton (Missouri-St. Louis) would score on a passed ball. The Sasquatch would match with an Isaac Martinez (Cerro Coso CC) single to score Payton Fort (North Iowa Area CC) to draw even at 1 in the fifth. Jumping to the bottom of the seventh, the Sasquatch had the Moo on the ropes. The winning run on second with two outs. Isaac Martinez, the runner. Ethan Mooser (Northern Colorado) at the plate. Tyler Wise (Kansas Wesleyan) would deliver a strike that Mooser would drop in front of Grant Rychnovsky (Northwestern (IA). Martinez rounded third when Rychnovsky would toss a laser home to gun down Martinez at the plate, keeping the score at 1-1. Extras would be short and exciting. Rychnovsky would take his place at second to begin the inning. Luke Saxton would lay down a bunt to move Rychnovsky over to third, but Owen Michelson’s (UNC-Asheville) throw to first would sail down the right field line to score Rychnovsky, the Moo the lead. Another run would score on a ground out and with two outs, Joshua Hardamon (Midland) would belt a double to centerfield, scoring two runs to make it 5 to 1. The bottom of the 8th would be brief. Tyler Wise would allow a runner to score to make it 5 to 2 but he would hold the Sasquatch to just that one run to secure the Moo’s first win of 2025. The Moo scored 5 runs on 6 hits with no errors while the Sasquatch score 2 runs on 3 hits while committing 2 errors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Moo finish the day with a 1-2 record while the Sasquatch move to 2-4 on the season.
