Zap Quick Start Results In Moo First Loss
Pierre, South Dakota- The Oahe Zap scored two runs in each of the first three innings and went on to defeat the Fremont Moo, 9-5, Friday night at Hyde Stadium, in Independence League Baseball Association action. Oahe outhit Fremont nine to five in the second game of the four-game series.
Oahe produced immediately from the top of the order, in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter Brandon Weigel drew a walk off Fremont starter Kadyn Van HIll. Then, Jackson Mix and Jacob Trusner followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Two batters later, Leondro Guevara drew a bases loaded walk. After a lineout to shortstop, Aiden Johnson pushed across a run with a walk, to put the Zap ahead, 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Zap added a pair of runs, with two outs. Jackson Mix struck out, but advanced to first on a passed ball. The next batter, Jacob Trusner, hit the first pitch he saw from Van HIll over the left field fence for a two-run home run, making it 4-0, Oahe.
Guevara led off the third inning for Oahe with a double. Two batters later, Aiden Johnson delivered an rbi double, scoring Guevara to make it 5-0. With two outs, nine-hole batter Cole Ottersberg poked an rbi single, scoring Johnson, to put Oahe ahead, 6-0, and chased Van HIll from the game.
Fremont got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Dylan Brandeburg and Brayden Hodges drew back-to-back walks off Oahe starter Jakub Swallow. A pair of wild pitches and a passed ball brought Brandenburg home. Then, leadoff batter Miles Meadows hit an rbi single, scoring Hodges, to make it 6-2.
The Moo added a run in the top of the fifth. Off reliever, Julius Cass, Cooper Fuchino drew a lead off walk before Issac Bonner was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch put runners at second and third for Brandenburg, who hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Fuchino, to make it 6-3.
Oahe extended the lead, however, in the bottom of the sixth, when pinch hitter Vince Polizzi hit a solo home run over the left field fence off Fremont reliever Tyler Dunham, to make it 7-3, the Zap.
In the top of the seventh, Fremont put together its best scoring threat of the night. With one out, Isaac Bonner singled and two batters later Dylan Brandenburg walked. A passed ball and two wild pitches scored Bonner, to make it 7-4. Brayden Hodges singled and with two outs, and
an errant pickoff attempt by Zap catcher Guevara allowed Brandenburg to score, making it 7-5.
However, that is all Fremont could get going offensively. In the bottom of the seventh, Mike Maanum led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, Emiliano Quedell drew a walk before Brandon Weigel reached on a throwing error by Fremont shortstop Brayden Hodges, which allowed Maanum to score, making it 8-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, Guevara was hit by a pitch from Fremont reliever Brandt Phillips. After a walk and two wild pitches, Guevara scored to make it 9-5, Oahe.
Fremont threatened in the bottom of the ninth when Brayden Chaney reached on an infield single and stole second and third, but Zap reliever Jake Hutter got Kobe Sandstrom to strike out swinging, to end the game.
Oahe (1-1) had nine runs on nine hits and three errors. Fremont (1-1) had five runs on five hits and two errors. Zap starter Jakeb Swallow pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three hits, two runs and struck out five, while walking four. Julius Kass (1-0) picked up the win. He pitched 3.0 innings, giving up two hits, three runs, two earned and struck out five, while walking four. Jake Hutter (1) earned the save, pitching 2.0 innings, while striking out four and walking one. Fremont starter Kadyn Van HIll (0-1) took the loss. He worked 2.2 innings, giving up six hits, six runs, struck out five and walked three. Tyler Dunham pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, struck out seven and walked two. Brandt Phillips pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one run, striking out four and walking three.
Offensively, Oahe was led by Jacob Trusner, who went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run. Vince Pollizi was 1-for-2 with a solo home run. Leando Guevara was 1-for-3 with an rbi. Aiden Johnson was 1-for-3 and drove in two runs. Cole Ottersberg was 1-for-2 with a run knocked in. Fremont’s Miles Meadows was 2-for-5 with an rbi. Dylan Brandenburg added an rbi, as well.
