Spuds Take Rubber Game From Moo
Casper, Wyoming - The Casper Spuds defeated the Fremont Moo, 9-2, Sunday afternoon at Mike Lansing Field, in Casper Wyoming. With the victory the Spuds claimed the series from Fremont after the teams split the first two games in the three game series.
The Spuds struck first in the predetermined seven inning contest. Casper plated four runs from three hits off Moo starter Brandon Lundquist, in the second inning, to go up 4-0. Fremont battle back, though, cutting the deficit in half, in the top of the third. Blake Tablazon led off with a single before Josh Blount hit a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field wall for a two-run homerun, making the score, 4-2. However, the Spuds would get those two run right back in the bottom of the third. Cleanup batter Nathan Martinez led off with a single, followed by a Brock Molenda single, two batters later. Bryce Peterson delivered a two-run triple to right center field, making the score 6-2, in favor of the Spuds. Casper added a run in the fourth. Matthew Marsic drew a walk and reached second base on a fielder's choice and throwing error to second by Ben Swails. Martinez then connected on his second hit of the game with a rbi single, making it 7-2. In the bottom of the sixth, the Spuds added two more off of Fremont reliever Cooper Mollett. Marsic and Chase Burke led off with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Marsic scored on a sacrifice popup by Chandler Stocking. Mac Wilksins then drew a bases loaded walk, two batters later, to make the final tally 9-2. The Moo tried to put a rally together in the seventh with Blount at first base after a one out walk, but Swails and Christian Hobbs both flew out for the final outs of the game. Casper scored nine runs on nine hits and two Fremont errors. Fremont scored two runs off six hits and no Spuds miscues.
Spuds starter Ty Vollmer (1-0) earned the win. He pitched five innings, giving up six hits, two runs, walked five and struck out three while giving up the homer to Blount. Nick Flores pitched a clean sixth inning and Daniel Barcena worked the seventh, walking one.
Brandon Lundquist (0-1) took the loss for Fremont. He pitched 2.1 innings, giving up six hits, three earned runs, walked one and hit two batters. Devin Fritzsch worked 2.2 innings of relief, giving up one hit and one unearned run. Cooper Mollett pitched the sixth, giving up two hits, two runs, walking two and striking out one.
Casper (1-1) will host the Nebraska Prospects, Tuesday night at Mike Lansing Field. Fremont (4-2) will travel to Hastings to play the Sodbusters, Tuesday night.
