Fremont, Moo - The Fremont Moo will try to break what is tied for their longest losing streak of the season on Monday when they begin five games in five days with a stop in Hastings to face the Sodbusters. First pitch for the one-game set is set for 6:35 p.m.
The Moo (11-8) dropped to third place are now 3.5 games back of first-place Casper and sit in third place after being overtaken by the Sodbusters (10-5). Hastings took second after sweeping the Moo in a doubleheader on Saturday evening.
The Moo’s offensive struggles continued in the first game of the doubleheader. The Moo fell behind 2-0 in the first and could never recover. Fremont would go on to score just one run thanks to Connor Peterson’s RBI double in the second. But the Moo couldn’t get anything else going against South Dakota State product Jack Kruger, who went a complete game seven inning performance in a 3-1 win. The Moo had only four hits.
Things did not end up going much better for Fremont in game two. Fremont starter Reese Kortum got chased after 2 ⅔ innings. The Moo struggled against another SDSU product, as Jude Sundquist, who gave up just two hits in five innings. The Moo ended up having just three hits in a 5-1 loss.
With the sweep, the Sodbusters move ahead in the season series 2-1. Fremont defeated Hastings in May with a 6-1 victory.
After scoring seven runs against the Prospects on June 12, the Moo have not scored more than three in a game in four straight contests, dropping the three most recent of those. Fremont is averaging just 3.33 hits in those losses.
The Moo offense this season has been paced this year by Wyatt Yetter (.353 BA), Cooper Fuchino (.321), Tyrus Petsche (.320), Miles Meadows (.314), Bridger Coleman (.311) and Trey Brooks (308). On the mound, Robert O’Malley (.636 ERA) and Kaydn Van Hill (3.17) both have two wins, while Alex Oliver (.000) and Hayden Kelberlau (1.68) have a pair of saves each.
For the Sodbusters, Sawyer Duddleston has been the offensive star. With a .442 batting average, Duddleston has already scored 12 runs. The Moo will avoid having to face Jack Kruger again tomorrow, who leads the team in wins with 3. Secundino Morales, Creighton Jacobitz and Braden Cork all have a pair of saves.
In the Independence League standing, Casper sits first among playoff-eligible teams, with Hastings (2.5 GB), Fremont (3.5), Spearfish (5.0) and Oahe (12.0) trailing behind.
Monday’s game is the third of a seven game road stretch for Fremont. The Moo travel to Casper for a pair Tuesday and Wednesday before two more at Hastings Thursday and Friday.
