Hastings, Nebraska - After a twelve-game stretch at home, the Fremont Moo (11-6) hit the road Saturday for a doubleheader against the Hastings Sodbusters (8-5). It’s the first of seven straight road games for Fremont to close out the first half of the 2024 ILB season.
The second-place Moo enter Saturday 1.5 games back of first place Casper. Hastings, 2.5 games back, sits in third place.
It’s been a streaky season for Hastings. After dropping their season opener to the Moo 6-1 on May 28, the Sodbusters reeled off four straight victories, two against the Zap and two against the Prospects. Hastings then were swept by the Spuds, but were able to get three wins against the Zap last week, briefly taking over second place in the league. But a recent split with the Sasquatch let the Moo move back to second.
As the record implies, it’s been an up and down season for Hastings offensively, who are hitting .239 as a team. The offensive star has been Sawyer Duddleston, who is hitting .447 with 38 at bats. Secundino Morales (.308) and Drew Vega (.300) are the only other players to have played at least seven games and be hitting .300.
Alexiel Delgado, Morales and Josh Prinner all have one homerun on the season. And while there haven’t been many consistent hitters for Hastings, the team has been consistent when it comes to driving in runners. Eight players have been four and six RBIs, with four players tied for the lead (6).
On the mound, Matis Crouwel and Jack Kruger both already have 2-0 records, sporting 4.091 and .750 ERAs respectively. Creighton Jacobitz,Braden Cork and Morales have all come through with two saves. Among players with at least 7.0 IP, Kruger is the ERA leader.
The Moo come to Duncan Field after a disappointing end to their homestand. Fremont had reeled off five straight wins before a 5-3 loss last night to the Prospects.
In the three-game set against the Prospects, Moo pitching shined while the offense faltered. The Fremont pitching staff gave up just eight runs across the three game set, including a complete game performance in game one from Kadyn Van Hill.
But other than a five run seventh in that same game, the Moo didn’t have a single other inning with more than two runs. Fremont had just two hits each in the final two games of the series.
Tyrus Petsche leadsthe team in batting average at .381, while Wyatt Yetter (.353), Miles Meadows (.333) and Cooper Fuchino (.327) are all above .300. On the mound, Kadyn Van Hill (2-1) and Robert O’Malley (2-0) are the first two pitchers to two wins, while both Hayden Kelberlau and Alex Oliver have a pair of saves.
In game one of the season between these squads, Zach Vincent was the star, with six strikeouts over sevens innings pitched, as the Moo ran to a 6-1 victory. Bridger Coleman had three hits.
Game one of the seven-inning doubleheader starts at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening, with game two to follow.
