Moo Recap: 7/21 - Moo begin final homestand with a loss to the Prospects
The final homestand of the season at Moller Field would see the Moo lose 7-2 to the Nebraska Prospects on Monday night.
Fremont’s backs were against the wall heading into the ballgame against the Nebraska Prospects. The playoffs are fast approaching in ILB, and the Moo is sitting three and a half games back. They needed a victory and for the Bison to secure a victory over the Spearfish Sasquatch on the night to stay alive in the second-half pennant race.
Moo manager Conor McGonigal called upon Brooks Kneifl (Wayne State) to lead the way on the hill for the Moo. Kneifl would receive some early defensive help, as at the top of the first inning, with a runner on second, Mike Valdivia would go the opposite way with a line drive to right. Paul Schuyler would turn for home when Tyman Long (North Dakota State) would fire a rope to home to peg Schuyler at the plate, saving a run and ending the top of first.
The 0-0 score would continue up until the fourth. Kneifl would work three scoreless innings before the Prospects would plate a run in the fourth on a Finn Hockstein single. The Prospects would chase Kniefl out of the game with a one-out, two RBI double from Mike Valdivia to make it 3-0 Prospects. Landon Mueller (Eastern Michigan) would relieve Kneifl, inheriting two runners in scoring position. Mueller would strike out two batters to get the Moo defense off the field, limiting the damage to only two runs.
The Prospects starter, Charlie Mosser, would throw six shutout innings, striking out seven Moo batters before exiting in the seventh. Issac Bourges would take over and immediately run into trouble. A pair of walks would begin the inning, bringing the tying run, Henry Hayman (Akron), to the plate. Hayman would drop a single into center. Paul Schuyler would not be able to field it cleanly, allowing Grant Ryan (Northwest CC) to score. One run wasn’t enough for the Moo in the seventh as Cooper Fuchino (Creighton) would nearly ground into a double play. His hustle would plate a run as he would beat the throw to first. It would be all the Moo would strike for in the seventh as Fremont trailed, 3-2.
Mueller would be relieved by Nate Moquin (Nebraska-Omaha) in the eighth. The Prospects would bring in one run on a Cody Cizek sac fly to get a run back as the Moo trailed 4-2 going to the bottom of the inning, where they wouldn’t score.
The ninth would see the Prospects push across three runs in the ninth. The Prospect half would be highlighted by a Ripken Fleck two RBI single to left to give the Prospects their largest lead of the night. Fremont’s ninth would be a silent one as they fall 7-2 to the Prospects.
Charlie Mosser picks up the win while Brooks Kneifl gets the loss.
The Moo scored two (2) runs on six (6) hits, while committing one (1) error. The Prospects scored seven (7) runs on twelve (12) hits and committed one (1) error.
Fremont moves to a 21-24 record overall and an 11-11 second-half record. The Prospects move to an 8-19 overall record after the result.
The Moo are back at home Thursday night, starting a two-game series with the Oahe Zap beginning at 7:05 at Moller Field, as the final homestand of the season continues.

Moo’s incredible comeback split the doubleheader and picked up a win to wrap up the road trip. After yesterday’s game was suspended due to rain, it would become a doubleheader at Duncan Field. The Moo looked to complete a comeback in game one and go for a series win in game two. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Resumed Game from Saturday: Game one of this impromptu doubleheader would begin in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Moo trailing 1-0. Eli Larson (Sioux Falls) would take the mound relieving Tyler Wise (Kansas Wesleyan) after his four-inning outing last night. The first pitch would be thrown at 5:01, and Larson would work a clean fifth to send it to the sixth. Larson and Braden Cork for Hastings would both work clean sixth and seventh innings on the mound before the Moo would fancy their first run in the eighth. Rocco Geritano (SUSCC) would reach on a base hit to kickstart the bats in the frame. He would make it to second on a Cooper Fuchino (Creighton) single, setting up Henry Hayman (Akron) with a prime RBI opportunity that he wouldn’t squander. Hayman would punch a hit into right field, bringing home Geritano to tie the game at one. Fuchino would make it to third but would not score in the inning. The Sodbusters would respond with two outs in the eighth. Brady Alexander would reach on a hit and steal second, setting up Kale Jensen for an opportunity to take a late lead. Jensen wouldn’t miss the Larson fastball and poke it into left, bringing home Alexander to make it 2-1 Hastings. The runs wouldn’t stop coming for the Busters as Joey Hecker would bring home two on a bases-loaded single to make it 4-1 Hastings. Another two-out single from Jett Hannaford would bring home the fourth and final run of the inning. The Moo trailed by four runs heading to the ninth, down by a score of 5-1. Braden Cork looked to finish off the contest with three outs, and he would get it to end this game. A 5-1 Sodbuster victory. Sodbuster reliever Braden Cork would get the win, and Eli Larson would get the loss for the Moo The Moo scored one (1) run on ten (10) hits, while committing two (2) errors. The Sodbusters scored five (5) runs on seven (7) hits and committed no errors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game Two The second game of the doubleheader began at 6:35 at Duncan Field and would be a seven-inning affair. After the loss in game one, the Moo needed a win more than ever in the second-half pennant chase to stay in contention. The opening frame would be a scoreless one for the Moo, but the Sodbusters would counter with two runs, one earned on a fielder's choice and another on a fielding error from the Moo to make it 2-0 Hastings at the end of the first. The Moo and the Sodbusters would go scoreless in the second, third, fourth, and fifth as starters Logan Anderson (Sioux Falls) and Josh West would dazzle in this one. The Moo starter Anderson would go five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on two walks while striking out five batters. Once he left, Joe Hauser (Creighton) would enter and give up two runs in his inning of work. It was almost three, but left fielder Carter Schellsmidt would hit Carter Sintek (Houston) on the relay to home to get the final out of the sixth inning at the plate, as the scoreboard read 4-0 Hastings, going to the seventh. The Moo would muster a run in the top of the seventh on a Seve Aguirre (SE Oklahoma State) single to bring home Brayden Jones (Doane) to make it 4-1. With two runners on, Sintek would walk, which would give way to Carter Schellsmidt. Schellsmidt would drop a single into the center to bring home two runs to make it a one-run ball game with the tying run on third for Fremont. Cooper Fuchino dug in with an opportunity to tie the game. A grounder over to Joey Hecker would be mishandled at first, allowing Fuchino to reach and Sintek to score, tying the game at four. Hayman would dig in and fly out, sending this game to the bottom of the seventh. Hauser would begin the inning, securing the first two outs before Brady Alexander would hustle his way to second with a double to put the winning run in scoring position. Hauser would get the final out and send us to an extra eighth inning. Hayman would be the runner on second to begin the frame and would move over to third on an infield single from Tyman Long (North Dakota State). Brayden Jones would launch a fly ball into left. It would have been out at Moller, but it was good enough to be a sac fly to score Hayman, making it 5-4 Moo. The same idea applies for Joshua Hardamon’s rocket into center to bring home Long to make it 6-4. Tyler Wise (Kansas Wesleyan) would poke a single into right to score Hardamon to give Fremont a three-run lead. Fuchino would dig in with two on and two out and put a hole in the left field wall with a two-RBI double, giving the Moo a 9-4 lead. Hauser would allow an unearned run to score to slam the door shut to split the series with a 9-4 win. Hauser picks up the win while Ethan Marshall gets the loss. The Moo scored nine (9) runs on eleven (11) hits, while committing two (2) errors. The Sodbusters scored five (5) runs on nine (9) hits and committed two (2) errors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In total, on the afternoon, Fremont moves to a 21-23 record overall and an 11-10 second-half record. The Sodbusters moved to a 26-18 overall record and a 10-6 second-half record. The Moo are back at home tomorrow night with a bout against the Nebraska Prospects beginning at 7:05 at Moller Field, beginning the final homestand of the season.

The contest between the Fremont Moo and the Hastings Sodbusters has been suspended in the middle of the fifth inning. The rest of the matchup will be played tomorrow as part of a doubleheader beginning at 5:05. Here is a recap of the first five innings so you’ll know where we are at when we resume play. The Fremont Moo walked into historic Duncan Field in dire straits. The Bovine Nine had dropped the series against the first place Oahe Zap, dropping them into last place in the second-half standings. In desperate need of a win, the Moo couldn’t wait to get this rivalry matchup started. But they would have to wait. The umpires were nowhere to be found at the time of first pitch. It would take an hour of turning over stones and making calls to find two umpires and they would eventually appear to a thunderous applause from the home fans. Cooper Fuchino (Creighton) would clobber a baseball that would hit the centerfield wall four-hundred and eight feet from home plate but would be left stranded at second as the top of the first came to an end. The Sodbusters would strike early with an RBI single from Brady Alexander to make it 1-0 Sodbusters at the end of the first. After that, the two would not supply any offense through the second, third, fourth, and the top of the fifth as the skies opened up in the middle of the fifth and rain fell from the heavens beginning another delay at Duncan Field. The delay would begin at 8:49, right before the bottom of the fifth and at 9:20, the game would be suspended until tomorrow afternoon, beginning at around 5:00.

Fun While It Lasts The Moo have spent a total of two games this season above a .500 win percentage. Fremont drops the final game against the Zap and ends up swept out of Pierre with a 10-3 loss. The Moo came into Hyde Stadium in the South Dakota capital looking to turn their second half around. With seven games left in the season, there was no margin for error for a team sitting two and a half games back from the top spot in the second half. If the Moo were the foxhounds in the second-half pennant chase, then the Zap were the fox. The Zap entered the day in first place, one game up on the Casper Spuds. It was do or die for both teams in the Friday night matchup. The Moo would ground into a double play in their first inning at the plate as they went scoreless. The Zap would work off a Moo error and plate two runs off of it, giving them a 2-0 lead at the end of the first. Both would tiptoe through the second and the top of the third. The bottom of the inning would see Vince Pollizi bring home a Zap run on a single into center to bring home the first earned run against Moo starter Zach Vincent (Midland). It would be the only run the Zap would score in the inning as Vincent and Company would get out of the jam. The scoreboard read 3-0 Zap. The Moo entered the fifth down by three and hitless. The first batter of the inning was Tyman Long (North Dakota State). He would collect the Moo’s first hit and first run with his second home run of the season over the right field wall. It would put a jolt into the Moo offense as the next three hitters would reach on balls in play. Joshua Hardamon (Midland) would make his way to third and score on a Carter Schellsmidt sacrifice fly. The inning would end soon after Schellsmidt’s sacrifice, and the Moo would be down by a run. The following inning would be a big inning for both teams. Big for the Moo because they would tie the game. A single from Henry Hayman (Akron), followed by a double from Cooper Fuchino (Creighton), would put the two in scoring position for Joshua Hardamon to drive them in. Hardamon would get Hayman in at home on a groundout to tie. The Moo would strand Fuchino at third. The Zap half of the sixth would be Oahe’s biggest inning. Three runs on four hits and an error would let the Zap retake the lead. It was a short-lived lead for the Moo as the Zap would retake the lead, 6-3, at the end of the sixth. It was a scoreless seventh out of the Moo. Vincent’s start would come to a close as he would give way to Brandt Phillips (USC-Bluffton) in the bottom of the inning. Ty Farwell for Oahe would drive a fly ball over the right field wall for a two-run home run. Farwell’s fourth home run of the season would make it 8-3 Zap as Brandt Phillips would work out of the frame. The straw that broke the Moo’s back would come in the eighth. Phillips would give the eighth to Cooper Lucas (East Texas Baptist). After a walk and a single, Zap pinch hitter Jared Pugrad would plate a run with an RBI double. Ty Farwell would dig in with the bases loaded, and Lucas would plunk him to bring another run into score, making it 10-3 for the Zap. The eighth would with that score as Lucas worked out of the bases-loaded conundrum. The Moo would go down in the order in the ninth as the Zap secure their thirtieth win of the second half. Zach Vincent is handed the loss while Jake Fuller gets the win. The Moo scored three (3) runs on seven (7) hits, while committing two (2) errors. The Zap scored ten (10) runs on twelve (12) hits with two (2) errors. Fremont moves to a 20-22 record overall and a 10-9 second-half record. The Zap moved to a 23-21 overall record and a 13-5 second-half record. The Moo are back tomorrow night in Hastings at historic Duncan Field, beginning a two-game series against the Sodbusters with first pitch at 6:35.

Errors bite the Moo as Oahe Zap takes the series, 4-2. Game two of the series fell on Thursday night in Pierre, with the Moo in need of a win. To this point, the Moo were 0-3 against the Zap, who were in the midst of their best season in club history. The Moo looked to change their luck on the road with a win against the Zap and even the series. Aiden McGrath (Skyline) made his fifth start of the season, and he was up against AJ Ponciano for the Zap. Both Ponciano and McGrath would pitch scoreless first innings, but the Moo managed a run in the second on a fielder’s choice to score Brayden Jones (Doane). McGrath would keep the Zap powerless in the bottom of the inning, winning the inning at the end of two. The Moo and the Zap would go scoreless in the third. Defense highlighted the inning with the Zap turning a six-four-three double play and a Rocco Geritano (SUSCC) diving catch in center. The Moo would add a run in the fourth. Joshua Hardamon (Midland) would lead off with a triple and score on a Grant Ryan (Northwest CC) fielder's choice. The Zap would get two outs, but the Moo would get the run. McGrath would shut out the Zap in the bottom of the fourth as the Moo led 2-0. The Moo had an opportunity stolen in the top of the fifth when, with Geritano standing on third with one out, a line drive off the bat from Cooper Fuchino (Creighton) would be caught in right by Nick Golden. Geritano would tag up, but a laser from Golden would catch Geritano at the plate, ending the inning and keeping a run off the board. The Zap would strike for their first run in the fifth against McGrath. McGrath would be his own worst enemy, as both runs would score from his right arm. A wild throw into center on a double play attempt would plate the first, and a wild pitch would score the second to tie the game at two as the fifth came to a close. The Zap and the Moo would go scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. A defensive error would chase McGrath out of the game with a Zap runner making it to second base. Eli Larson (Sioux Falls) would come in as the runner from second and would advance to third. After a strikeout of Andrew Phillips, Jared Pugrad would sacrifice himself to bring home the go-ahead run. Then, Larson would give up a walk and a hit by pitch. A double steal would see a wild throw from Fuchino trying to get the lead runner at third sail into left to plate another run. The scoreboard read 4-2 in favor of the Zap, going to the eighth. The Moo and the Zap would go scoreless in the eighth, and the Moo would go quietly in the ninth, giving the Zap the win 4-2. Aiden McGrath would get the loss while Brady Glenn would get the win. The Moo scored two (2) runs on five (5) hits, while committing three (3) errors. The Zap scored four (4) runs on seven (7) hits on two (2) errors. Fremont moves to a 20-21 record overall and a 10-8 second-half record. A pair of home runs is the Moo’s undoing in this one as the Zap win the series opener, 6-2. The overview of the trip heading up to Pierre was that this road trip could be the make-or-break trip of the 2025 season. The Oahe Zap entered tied for first, leading the Moo by half a game in the standings. It looked like an exciting start to the road trip. The Moo and the Zap would go scoreless through the first two and a half innings in this one. Wes Cunningham (Southern Arkansas) would run into some trouble in the bottom of the third, however. Tanner Jacobson (Cloud County) would throw out a potential run at home with a strike to keep it at 0-0. But the Zap would strike for a run on a passed ball, as Emiliano Curriel would score to make it 1-0 Oahe. The Zap would live up to their nickname in the fourth and fifth, swinging powerful bats and striking Cunningham with a couple of home runs. The culprit in the fourth would be Quinn Ludvigson with a two-run home run, making it 3-0. His accomplice would strike in the fifth. Vince Pollizi would strike with a two-run homer of his own. The Zap continued to score in the inning as an error from Grant Ryan (Northwest CC) would score Ty Farwell from third to make it 6-0 Zap. The Moo would avoid the shutout and strike for a run in the top of the eighth. Joshua Hardamon (Midland) would collect his team-leading, thirty-seventh RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to score Cooper Fuchino (Creighton), earning Fremont’s first run of the game. Cunningham would work into the seventh. Throwing one hundred and five pitches and struck out four batters.
