Moo Recap: 6/2 - Sodbusters walk-off the Moo to end the 8-game road trip


Moo fall to in-state rivals as the road trip concludes


The Moo looked to wrap up the road trip with a victory over their Nebraska nemesis at Duncan Field, tthe home of the undefeated Hastings Sodbusters.

The scoring started immediately for the Moo. Carter Schellsmidt (Marshalltown CC) would start with a lead-off double. He would later score on a Michael Baker (Cal State-Chico) single and the offensive blitz would begin. 

Brinden Floyd (RCSJ), Baker, and Luke Saxton (Missouri-St. Louis) would all reach and score to jump on Markus Miller, giving the Moo an early 4-0 lead.

Zach Vincent (Midland) would take the mound, opposite of Miller and would dazzle once again. Seven (7) innings, four (4) runs, six (6) hits, and five (5) strikeouts, setting a season high for Vincent.

The Sodbusters would plate a pair of runs in the first and a lone run in the third.

The top half of the fifth for the Moo would see theem score two runs. Brinden Floyd would cross the plate on a passed ball and Nikolai Wede (MSU-Mankato) would drive in Joshua Hardamon (Midland) to make it 6-3 Fremont.

The Sodbusters would put across a lone run the bottom half of the inning to make it 6-4. 

The bats would fall silent for both sides as the score would remain in front until the ninth inning came around.

Carter Baete (Doane) would start the inning by relinquishing a single and double before Lucas Hamzeh (Midland) would enter in relief. A bloop single would allow a run to score to cut the Fremont lead down to one. A groundout would lead to the scond out but the tying run would score.

With two outs, Ryan Jarvis would hit a groundball to shortstop, Michael Baker would charge hard to field it but it would pop in and out of his glove. The winning run would score and Moo would fall 7-6 in the 9th.

The final line saw the Moo score six (6) runs on five (5) hits and committed two (2) errors. The Sodbusters scored seven (7) runs on nine (9) hits while committing three (3) errors. Hastings Brock Cross would get his first win of the season while Carter Baete picks up his first ILB loss.

The Moo fall to a 3-5 record as they head back home. The Sodbusters improve to a perfect 7-0 record and follow the Moo up to Fremont for tomorrow nights game.

The Moo were back at home for the first time in the 2025 season. They looked toward the stands to provide the energy as the team looked to reward them with a win in return. A familiar foe in the Spearfish Sasquatch made the trip down to Fremont after hosting the Moo for five games The scoring started early for the Moo. Two runs would score in the bottom of the first off of William Furry. Michael Baker (Cal State-Chico) would drive in a run and Nikolai Wede (MSU-Mankato) would hit a sac fly to left to make it 2-0 Moo at the end of the first. The Sasquatch would ambush Brooks Kneifl (Wayne State) with three doubles, all scoring runs, four in total to put the Sasquatch in front. They would push across one more on a hit-by-pitch in the third to make it 5-2 Spearfish. Michael Baker would strike again in a big way. A solo home run (his and the team's) first of the season would bring the Moller Maniacs to their feet as the Moo hoped it would kickstart a comeback. The Moo trailed 5-3 at the end of the third. The scoreboard would sit at 5-3 Spearfish for the next four innings. The seventh would see the Sasquatch put across a run on an error on Grant Rychnovsky (Northwestern) out in left field. The ninth would see Spearfish push across a run on a double steal. It was 7-3 Spearfish in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Jake Mitchell would reach base after being hit by a pitch. He would take second on a passed ball to put him in scoring position. Preston Gajewski (NOC-Tonkawa) would hit a grounder to second and an errant throw would allow Mitchell to score to make it 7-4 in the 9th. That’s all the Moo could muster in the 9th as the Moo would fall 7-4 and lose their fourth straight. The final line saw the Moo score four (4) runs on seven (7) hits and committed five (5) errors. The Sasquatch scored seven (7) runs on fourteen (14) hits while committing one (1) error. The Moo fall to a 3-6 record as their 15-game home stand begins. The Sasquatch improve to a 4-6 record. New Kids on the Block Carter Baete (Doane), Joe Hauser (Creighton), Parker Otte (Iowa Central), Cooper Fuchino (Creighton), Seve Aguirre (Johnson County), Henry Hayman (Akron), and Tyrus Petsche (Johnson County) all join the Moo for the homestand. Getting Back to Basics The Moo have a run differential of -20, which is tied with the Nebraska Prospects for the worst run differential in the ILB. The new bats joining the team look to change that. How Does Spearfish Size Up? The Sasquatch enter with a 3-6 record. They lost their last three contests against the Moo after taking the first two in the five-game series. The Sasquatch recently defeated the Nebraska Prospects 22-7. PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR: FREMONT: #31 - INF MICHAEL BAKER (B/T: R/R) Baker (Cal State-Chico) continues to swing a great bat this season. Baker picked up a hit against the Sodbusters on Monday, hitting safely in five of the six games he’s played in this season. He has the second-highest batting average on the Moo, behind Rob Hodges at .409 #17 - C CARTER SCHELLSMIDT (B/T: R/R) Schellsmidt (Marshalltown) has picked up 5 hits in 5 games this season for the Moo. He led off the game versus Hastings with a double, which was his third of the season. SPEARFISH: #6 - INF KYLE PHIN (B/T: R/R) Phin (Cerro Coso) made his 2025 ILB debut against the Moo going 0-4. In his second game with the Sasquatch, Phin went 5-5 with three singles, a double, and a home run, collecting 4 RBI’s and scoring 5 times. #26 - UTL OWEN MICHELSON (B/T: R/R) In Michelson’s last game versus the Prospects, Michelson went 3-5, with two singles and a home run. Tonight's home opener at Moller Field between the Fremont Moo and the Hastings Sodbusters has been cancelled due to inclement weather. There will be an announcement for a rescheduled date as soon a possible and it will be updated on this article. UPDATE The Moo will play a doubleheader on Saturday. Game 1 will start at 4:05 against the Hastings Sodbusters while Game 2 will be against the Nebraska Prospects Tomorrow's game at home against the Spearfish Sasquatch will begin at 7:05 at Historic Moller Field.

The final four games against the Sasquatch, Fremont committed only three (3) errors. Nearly There The Moo wrap up a, 8-game in seven day road trip with a duel against the inter-state rival, the Hastings Sodbusters Victory but the V stands for Vincent Zach Vincent (MIdland) makes his second start of the season. Vincent pitched twice last season against the Sodbusters, throwing a six (6) inning complete game, along with thirteen (13) total innings, allowing three (3) earned runs, and striking out ten (10) batters. He was on his best May 30th. Seven (7) innings, no earned runs, seven (7) hits, and seven (7) strikeouts in the 6-1 win over Hastings. The Mighty Mighty Sodbusters The Sodbusters have started a perfect 6-0 to begin the 2025 season, outscoring opponent 49-24 (+25) to sit a top the ILB table. PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR: FREMONT: #19 - RHP/OF TYLER WISE (B/T: R/R) Wise (Kansas Wesleyan) has reached base safely in each of the last three games. A walk against Oahe keeps Wise’s on base streak. He has the second highest OBP on the Moo behind Michael Baker. #6 - INF PRESTON GAJEWSKI (B/T: R/R) Gajewski (NOC-Tonkawa) has been a reliable bat in the lineup. In six games this season, Gajewski has a hit in five (5), as well as having six (6) RBIs. HASTINGS: #25 - OF LUKE CAUSSEY (B/T: L/L) Caussey (Arkansas Tech) only made one plate appearance in the spring for the Wonder Boys, but his time in the ILB has been invaluable. Caussey is batting .429 and has an OPS of 1.222. Caussey made headlines by being the first Sodbuster to hit a home run at Duncan Field in two seasons #4 - INF DREW VEGA (B/T: R/R) Another Arkansas Tech product, Vega has started the season on a tear. It was 85 and sunny in the South Dakota capital, Pierre, as the Moo looked to right the ship. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky for what would become a less than perfect afternoon for the Moo. Much like the night prior, errors would hurt the Moo early. The Zap would score two on a Michael Baker (Cal State-Chico) error at third to make it an early 2-0 Zap lead in the 2nd inning. The Zap would continue their offensive attack, pushing across three in the third and forth. The Moo would score a run in the top of the fifth as Preston Gajewski (NOC-Tonkawa) would make a mad dash home on a stolen base and throwing error combo to put the Moo on the board. The Moo had a singular run before the Zap would score two in the bottom half to answer back the Moo’s lone run to make it, 10-1 Zap at the end of the fifth. The nail in the coffin came in the bottom of the 7th. Pitcher-coach, Tyler Dunham (Midland) would come on and surrender the walk-off run to send the Moo packing. A sac fly from Andrew Phillips would score Nick Golden to end the game at 11-1. The Moo would be ten-run ruled for the second time in two nights The Moo fall to a 3-4 record as they head into Hastings. The Zap improve to 3-5 and sweep the Moo during their opening home stand. The age-old, US Measurement of “Length in Football Fields” The Moo walked a season high eleven (11) batters in yesterday’s ball game. Eleven walks down to first base times the ninety (90) feet it takes to get there comes out to 990 feet, or 330 yards. That’s over three (3) football fields of walks given out. All Hands of Deck The Moo have called upon five (5) different position players to pitch this season. (Grant Rychnovsky, Tyler Wise, Tanner Jacobsen, Joshua Hardamon, Brayden Jones) Can’t Help But Hit Michael Baker (Cal State-Chico) has hit safely in four-straight contests for the Moo. Baker had a ten-game hit streak at Cal State-Chico this past spring (April 13 to May 1st). Capital Punishment The Moo have an 11-11 record in Pierre since the Moo have had to play on the road in the South Dakota capital (Pierre Trappers 2018-2022 / Oahe Zap 2023-Present) PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR: FREMONT: #1 - INF ROB HODGES (B/T: R/R) Appearing in only three (3) games this season, Hodges has been productive at the plate. In his nine (9) plate appearances, Hodges has recorded two (2) hits, an RBI, has walked four (4) times, and has scored three (3) times this season. #6 - INF PRESTON GAJEWSKI (B/T: R/R) Gajewski (NOC-Tonkawa) has been a vital run producer early on this season for the Moo. Gajewski has driven in six (6) runs in the last three (3) games he has appeared in. He has three (3) hits in each of those games as well. OAHE: #11 - IF/C QUINN LUDVIGSEN (B/T: R/R) Ludvigsen (MSU-Mankato) went 2-3 in last nights contest, scoring twice and walking twice. Ludvigsen raised his on-base percentage to .519, which is the highest on the team for a player with more than six (6) plate appearances. #29 - IF AIDEN JOHNSON (B/T: R/R) Johnson (Avila) went 1-2 with two (2) runs and four (4) RBIs in yesterdays ballgame against the Moo. It was a warm night in the South Dakota capital as the Moo rode into Hyde Stadium on a three-game win streak. They would start the scoring in the 2nd inning against Easton Pratt (MSU-Mankato) as Luke Saxton (Missouri-St. Louis) would come in on a Caden Brezinski (Butler) sacrifice fly. Grant Rychonvosky (Northwestern) would come around to score from second on a Preston Gajewski (NOC-Tonkawa) single to make it 2-0 Moo. The home side would ambush Aiden McGrath (Skyline) as with two out, a pair of Moo errors would bring home two Zap runs to tie it at two at the end of the 2nd. After McGrath’s two innings, Drew Gilbert (Ohlone) would have a difficult time finding the zone in the 3rd. Four runs would score, all earned against Gilbert. Joshua Hardamon (Midland) would make a surprise appearance in relief and work out of the inning. The Zap had batted around without registering a hit. The Moo would not muster any more runs in the contest. It would go from bad to worse as the Zap would put up a touchdown on the scoreboard, seven runs. Two bases-clearing doubles would highlight the inning as Hardamon worked his way through his 2.1 innings. It was 13-2 Zap at the end of the 5th. Brayden Jones (Doane) would come in relief and shut down the Zap in the bottom of the sixth. The Moo would put up a little fight in the top of the 7th, but would ultimately fall to the Independence League’s newest rule: the 10-run rule. The Moo would drop the first game in Pierre, 13-2 in seven innings. The Moo fall to a 3-3 record as they head into Sunday. The Zap improved to 2-5 as they look to sweep the two-game set tomorrow afternoon. Cows are Hot Since dropping the first two games of the season, the Moo have won their last three games outscoring their opponents (19-11)] during that span. Errorless Ball Since the Opening Day debacle, when the Moo defense committed 6 errors in one game, the defense has only committed 3 errors since. Schellsmidt, a smash-hit Carter Schellsmidt (Marshalltown CC) had a wonderful night at the plate in last night's game versus the Sasquatch, going 2-5 with 3 RBIs and a double. Desperate Times call for Desperate Measures Tanner Jacobsen (Cloud County CC) was called upon to pitch in yesterday’s game, throwing 3 innings, allowing 1 run, and 4 walks, while striking out 2 batters. PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR: FREMONT: #19 - OF/RHP TYLER WISE (B/T: R/R) Despite minimal playing time, Wise (Kansas Wesleyan) has been a sparkplug when playing. He pitched 3 shutout innings back on May 28th in the game two of the doubleheader against Spearfish to start the win streak. At the plate, Wise is 2-4 with two hits and 3 walks. He has scored 4 times this season after reaching base. #31 - INF MICHAEL BAKER (B/T: R/R) Baker (Cal State-Chico) has been the deadliest hitter in McGonigal’s lineup this season. Baker enters tonight batting .538 with an OPS of 1.418. He has 7 hits this season, 4 of which have been for extra bases. He sat last night but anticipates a return to McGonigal’s lineup tonight. OAHE #2 - INF/C GAVIN FRASER (B/T: R/R) Fraser (Pike) is off to an excellent start this summer. In five games played, Fraser has five hits and a team-leading .294 batting average. He looks to continue his success at the plate against the Moo tonight. #14 - OF JAKE DAILY (B/T: R/R) Daily (St. Peter’s) has provided a much-needed gap finder in the Zap lineup. On Opening Day, Daily went 3-6 with 2 doubles and drove in 4 RBI’s. The rubber match of the 5-game series was set to be a good one. The Moo entered winners of the last two and looked to make it three in a row before heading to Pierre the next day. The Sasquatch looked to get back into the win column and take the series. Chase Nelson (St. Thomas) took the mound for the Moo, opposite of Caleb Hoppe (Dakota State). Nelson would give up the first run as a fielding error and a wild throw from Rob Hodges (would allow the first Sasquatch run to score. The top of the second would be all Moo as Hoppe had struggles throwing strikes. After walking the bases loaded, a run would score on a walk, a passed ball, and a groundout making it 3-1 Moo without registering a hit. The Sasquatch would answer back in the bottom half of the inning, as Giovanni Mastrorosa (Captial U.) would bring home a run on a single and Ethan Mooser (Northern Colorado) would bring home another on asac fly to right to tie it at 3 at the end of the 2nd inning. The third would spell disaster for Caleb Hoppe. 4 earned runs would cross the plate for the Moo, all charged against Hoppe. All nine would step to the plate in the inning as the Moo would take a 7-3 lead. The Squatch would get a run back in the 4th. The Moo would respond with a run of their own in the 5th with Carter Schellsmidt (Marshalltown CC) driving in Tyler Wise (Kansas Wesleyan) to make it 8-4 Moo. After a few scoreless innings, the Sasquatch would close the gap as they would bring home a run with an RBI in the 8th to make in 8-5, Moo still in front The Moo would tack on one insurance run during the top of the 9th thanks to Nik Wede (MSU-Mankato) with a fielder’s choice to make it 9-5 Moo. Tanner Jacobsen (Cloud County CC) would be called upon to finish the game on the mound. Throwing 3 innings of 1 run ball to secure the Moo victory, 9-5 in 9. The Moo improve to a 3-2 record as they head to Pierre to start a two-game series with the Oahe Zap on May 31st. The Sasquatch drop to 2-6 and they’ll play the Nebraska Prospects starting on June 1st. St. Thomas’ Chase Nelson makes his season debut with a chance to get the Moo their third win in a row. Put Me In Coach Moo assistant coach, Tyler Dunham (Midland) made his season debut on the mound in yesterday’s game in relief of Broc Songster’s (Doane) outstanding debut, securing the Moo’s second win of the season. Play-Maker Baker Michael Baker went 3-5 in yesterday's game, hitting two doubles. He now has more doubles than singles entering tonight’s game. With 4 RBIs this season, he is second on the team behind Joshua Hardamon 8th Inning Wonders Out of the 22 runs scored this season, no inning has seen more Moo runs than the 8th. The Moo have scored a combined 10 runs in the 8th inning of games this season. They Clean Up Since committing 6 errors in the first game of the season, the Moo has only committed 2 errors in the field since the season opener. PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR: FREMONT: #17 - C CARTER SCHELLSMIDT (B/T: R/R) Schellsmidt (Marshalltown CC) went 2-4 in yesterday’s game, scoring twice in the affair. Schellsmidt has begun this young season batting .400 and looks to build upon a solid start as the backstop. #31 - INF MICHAEL BAKER (B/T: R/R) Baker (Cal State-Chico) has been the deadliest hitter in McGonigal’s lineup this season. Baker enters tonight batting .538 with an OPS of 1.418. He has 7 hits this season, 4 of which have been for extra bases. SPEARFISH #11 - OF LUCAS TERILLI (B/T: L/L) Terilli (Eastern New Mexico) made his debut last night, going 2-5 in the contest. Terilli previously played summer ball with the Thunder Bay Border Cats of the Northwoods League. With Eastern New Mexico over the past two seasons, Terilli has a batting average of .387. #2 - IF PAYTON FORT (B/T: R/R) Fort (NIACC) has appeared in every single Sasquatch game this season and is batting.174.
