Leahy Powers Moo to Doubleheader Split Against Hastings

FREMONT, Neb. — Fremont Moo opened a three-game series against the Hastings Sodbusters on Saturday evening with a doubleheader after Friday night's game was postponed because of the threat of severe weather. The Moo fell 8-3 in Game 1 before rallying for a 7-3 victory in Game 2 to earn a split of the doubleheader.
GAME 1: Hastings Sodbusters 8, Fremont Moo 3
Ripken Fleck led off the first inning with a single to left field. Cooper Fuchino and Easton Leahy followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases. Burke Jasa delivered an RBI single to score Fleck and put the Moo on the board first, 1-0. Fuchino later scored on a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 2-0 at the end of the first inning.
Hastings responded in the second inning with back-to-back walks, followed by a bunt, sacrifice fly and RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
The Sodbusters took the lead in the third inning with a three-run home run to left field, making it 5-2.
Hastings added two more runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 7-2.
The Sodbusters plated their final run in the fifth inning to make it 8-2.
With two outs in the sixth inning, Eamon O'Gorman reached on an error and stole second base. Giovanni Malatesta followed with an RBI single to score O'Gorman and cut the deficit to 8-3.
The Sodbusters held off the Moo the rest of the way to secure the 8-3 victory.
GAME 2: Fremont Moo 7, Hastings Sodbusters 3
Hastings struck first with a three-run home run in the opening inning to take an early 3-0 lead.
Easton Leahy led off the second inning with a double, and Wyatt Throckmorton followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Leahy later scored on a fielder's choice to get the Moo on the board, trailing 3-1.
Burke Jasa drew a leadoff walk in the fourth inning. A single by Leahy and a Hastings throwing error advanced Jasa to third and Leahy to second. Jacob Coshenet lifted a sacrifice fly to score Jasa and cut the deficit to 3-2. Throckmorton followed with an RBI single to score Leahy and tie the game at 3-3.
Malatesta led off the fifth inning with a single. Jasa reached on a fielder's choice before Leahy stepped to the plate and launched a two-run home run to left field, giving the Moo a 5-3 lead.
With two outs, Throckmorton reached on a Hastings error. Liam Sullivan lined a single to left field to move Throckmorton to third. O'Gorman followed with an RBI single to score Throckmorton and make it 6-3. Another Hastings throwing error allowed Sullivan to score, extending the lead to 7-3.
The Moo pitching staff held the Sodbusters scoreless the rest of the way to secure the 7-3 victory and earn a split of the doubleheader.
